Treat Yourself Like a Child

One of the best pieces of advice I was ever given was 'it's okay to soothe yourself like you'd soothe a child'. Sometimes, when vulnerability and anxiety get to be too much, it's right to do whatever makes you happy, even if it's not considered 'mature'. It's also a good idea to check in with yourself the way you would a child. Are your needs being met, or are you low because they're not? The most mature, adult thing you can do in life is take care of yourself, and if that means juice and a cartoon, then that's precisely what you should do.

As a toddler, nothing frustrated me more than someone telling grouchy lil' me that I was 'just tired'. My annoyance is perfectly valid, thank you very much! The accusation of tiredness only fuelled my tiny, yet determined fire. Looking back, those pesky grown-ups were almost certainly right. When I'm feeling low, one of the first things I consider is how tired I am. A self-imposed naptime is sometimes all we need to refresh ourselves and hit 'reset' on that downwards spiral. This is especially important if you experience fatigue, as it's so easy to keep pushing until you're completely burned out. Take a nap, get comfy and cosy, and give your mind and body a chance to recharge.

Similarly, as a busy adult, it's incredibly easy to forget our other basic needs, which can have a huge knock-on effect on our wellbeing. Are you hydrated? Have you been eating well? These are all things we consider when a child is mid-meltdown, but things we often neglect in ourselves. Get yourself a hydrating drink you enjoy. Heck, put it in a jazzy cup if it'll make you smile. Fun glasses aren't just for kids, friends! Catch me with my Disney tumblers and straws any day of the week. Life is way too short for plain glasses, and that is a hill I'm willing to die on. If you need a snack, let yourself eat something fun and yummy. If apples are your thing, groovy. If sweets shaped like animals is what makes you smile, then let yourself enjoy that little boost! Don't neglect yourself for the sake of working harder or longer. Everyone has to eat and drink, and if you can make that moment fun and just for you, then I fully encourage you to do so.

When it comes to distracting yourself in times of stress, sometimes it's best to go back to the basics that made you feel safe as a young person, too. Wrap yourself in a soft blanket, and put on a gentle, heartwarming children's film. I'm a bit obsessed with Babe at the moment after noticing it on Netflix. It's my go-to on fragile days. The sheep are just too cute! If holding a soft toy makes you feel safe and keeps anxiety at bay, cuddle that plushie! If keeping your hands busy with toys or puzzles is what stops you from negative coping strategies, do it! If having a room full of pink and unicorns is what makes you feel smiley in your space, then that's what you should do (I speak from experience on this one). I'm a certified unashamed fan of the adorable. The point is, that whatever makes you feel warm and full is valid and important, no matter how 'childish' society wants to consider it. 

As adults, we're often told to deny ourselves simple pleasures for the sake of 'maturity' and to me, that's ridiculous. Part of self-care is letting yourself have what your heart needs to feel happy and peaceful. Of course, I'm not suggesting that we all just abandon our responsibilities and turn into the adults in those awful Haribo adverts, but to set aside time for yourself is beyond important. It's vital. Indulge yourself without shame or pretence, even if that means loving yourself like you'd love a child. Maybe one day adult silly straws will be a thing, much like adult colouring. Who knows?!

Disney addict, I have quite a few plushies, majority of pjs are Disney or Harry Potter, I watch a lot of animated movies ... yep, I'm an adult :) I love reliving my childhood or treating myself to some childlike behaviours because adult life has not been too kind to me, and, there's nothing wrong with it :) <3

  2. My favourite type if self care is a relaxing bubble bath but I do love a good Disney movie, or feel good movie. Coyote Ugly and Practical Magic are two of my go tos
