Spooky Netflix Picks: October 2018

It's that time of year when sitting wrapped in blankets, with a hot drink and a good TV series to binge-watch seems like the best of ideas. You've probably already gathered that I'm a fan of any excuse to hibernate, so naturally, I love a good ol' binge-watch. Netflix has a banquet of spooky series to watch, ranging from bone-chilling horror to documentaries of the macabre. There are tons of series I'm yet to watch, so I'm sure there'll be more of these posts in the future! For now, here are the spooky series I've been loving this month.

Erm, you're not popcorn!

Salem // I finished this series at the beginning of the month after working my way through it in September. I'm not going to lie, I only started watching it because I heard Marilyn Manson plays a minor character in Season 3 (his character is great, by the way!). It was so worth it. This tale of oppression, heartbreak, and power takes a thought-provoking look at just how far someone can go when they feel cornered. Plus, you're almost definitely going to end up with a weird crush on Cotton Mather. Sorry.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina // This show is brilliant. It's much darker than the original series, and not really comparible. It's macabre, with excellent use of witch folklore and theology, and weaves a wonderfully inricate web between the characters as the story grows to its peak. The soundtrack, set design, and costumes are killer, and you'll find yourself falling in love with unexpected characters - looking at you, Aunt Hilda! My only criticism is that the script seems a little clumsy and heavy-handed in places, desperate to make the point that Sabrina and her friends are modern, intersectional feminists. It's wonderful that they are, and fabulous that there's such good representation and important issues raised through the story, and it's part of what makes The Chilling Adventures... so special. My point is that it could be improved if they showed us in the characters' actions, rather than forcing it with unnatural dialogue! I must say, I wasn't too thrilled with the ending of the series, so I'm eager to see the direction Sabrina goes in in season 2!

The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell // I've already mentioned my devoted adoration of Christine McConnell's work. I thoroughly recommend this series. You'll suddenly realise that your life is missing the adventures of a wolf-man, the sassy reanimated remains of a once-worshipped Egyptian cat, and the cobbled together and ressurected form of a fork-handed raccoon with a disturbing sexual appetite. All of that, plus breathtaking cake art set in a stunning mansion, make this perfect viewing!

The Haunting of Hill House // I promised I'd be talking about this before too long, and here I am. This series is nothing short of a masterpiece. It's poignant, poetically written, and forms a peerfect blend of horror and emotive drama. I found myself sobbing at this more than I expected, was actually frightened by a jump-scare for the first time in a long time, and truly did not want this series to end. It's beautiful, sensitive, and has far more depth than I ever anticipated. It left me speechless, and I'm struggling to find more to say here other than 'please watch it'.

Dark Tourist // I've just started watching this and I am hooked! I'm adding everything to my own spooky bucket list as I watch! Dark Tourist takes you on adventures to the more macabre side of life, from death worship to radioactive towns, from locked-away dictatorships to voodoo practise. This exploration of areas most people would never consider visiting, combined with the respectful immersion into lesser-known cultures makes this docu-series fascinating and thrilling in equal measure. Take me with you next time!

What series have you been loving? Have you got any spooky shows on your watch list? Send your recommendations this way!
