Hey Spookies! About that secret activity after #CarnLIVal…it was an escape room! Knowing how much Katy and Sam love escape rooms, I had a sneaking suspicion and was so freaking jazzed to discover I was correct! Breakout Liverpool were our marvellous hosts and it was so much fun!
|This is such an unflattering picture of me but WE BROKE OUT!|
Truthfully, I was a little nervous and had very little faith in myself, as I am a girl of academic intelligence but little in the way of logic or common sense. I was super glad to be put in a team with the wonderful Danielle and Abby, and determined that we were going to smash it. The puzzles, not the door, to be clear. So, off we went into ‘Classified’ to be given our instructions, and an hour to break out.
For those uninitiated to the thrill of escape rooms, Breakout Liverpool gives you some instructions and an hour to break out. During that time, a guide is watching you through a camera and a microphone, so you can communicate verbally and they may give you hint messages via a screen on the wall. The same screen displays how much time you have left. Of course, you can leave easily any time by simply pressing a button if you become panicked or need the loo or something. The rooms are large and not claustrophobic at all, and have different themes and degrees of challenge difficulty.
Classified is based on an exam to become a secret agent, as is themed accordingly. Without giving too much away, the puzzles are themed around unlocking boxes, cupboards, and devices to find pieces of a maths question (don’t worry, there’s a calculator!) which produces the code to get out. The different puzzles and ways to explore the room and methods of hiding clues are so brilliantly thought out, engaging, exciting, and challenging.
Searching through the rooms and working out the puzzles as a team was so much fun, and I must say, Danielle makes an excellent leader. She’s super sensible and organised. Towards the end of our time, I wasn’t sure if we were going to break out successfully, but thanks in part to the brilliant hints that our guide sent us over the screen, with three minutes to spare, we did it! Yep, we broke out!
Days later, I’m still grinning ear to ear when I think about what a great experience it was and I am desperate to go back! I can easily see why Sam and Katy love them so much. It was legitimately exhilarating and gave me such a rush to do it! Hopefully I’ll be back ASAP with Freddie and my family to try another room!
